In the opinion of artist An Idiot, African art is currently going through “a fantastic phase.” What’s more, the phase is going largely unnoticed. It is, namely, the era of so-called “forgers and imitators,” although in reality they’re anything but.

They are nameless, creative artists producing often astoundingly unique and new art forms that weren’t available just a few years ago. These pieces are simply based on or influenced by the works of traditional predecessors. Although they are produced for commercial purposes, many of them show a great deal of autonomy. This autonomy is often even more pronounced than their famous role models.
An Idiot has collected these works, which he calls AFRICANISM or “Posttraditional African Tribal Art” (PATA) for the MUSEUM OF LIBERALISM ART, and simply renames them to create new works – alongside the anonymous African artists – as part of his COOPERATIVE RECONTEXTUALISM project.
An Idiot began collecting tribal art in the early1980s, and has viewed tens of thousands of authentic artworks. Now, he is doing the same thing with PATA, which he sees as a new and rapidly growing field of collecting. In RECONTEXTUALIZING African art, he takes advantage of the liberalistic, border-crossing freedom to blend authentic pieces, some of them centuries old, with brand new objects produced for retail trade, thereby encouraging viewers to develop a discerning eye. With his AFRICANISM GALLERY and his method of RECONTEXTUALISM, An Idiot intends to make PATA works accessible to people interested in native creativity.
