You don’t often see a visual artist dedicating his own watch brand to the Rolling Stones song “Time Is On My Side.” But there’s a very special reason the artist An Idiot decided to do just that. In 1987, he chose to strictly deny himself art for a quarter century so that he could spend the time obtaining all the skills he needed to construct his own artistic world. He chose this path because he did not want to subject himself to the art world imperative of working in a so-called recognizable style. This imperative hinders creativity, and therefore art itself. With the brand AIWA, which stands for AN IDIOT’S WATCHES, the artist is now finally displaying the great stylistic variation of his work over these 25 “unpainted” years. Time Is On My Side.
